Kindness....a word and concept that parents everywhere hope to teach their children, starting when they are very young. In today's day and age though, kindness seems to have been replaced by many young people and bullying behaviors seem to prevail. Why is that, and what can be done to change this behavior, teaching our children to be truly kind to one another? Author Judith Anne Rice has come up with a curriculum to teach kindness to the youngest of our societal citizens, children ages three to six years. The book is organized very nicely, with the following chapters: 1. Creating Calm 2. Love 3. Feelings and Empathy 4. Gentleness 5. Respect 6. Self-Control 7. Friendship 8. Conflict Resolution 9. Visualization 10. Parent and Child Home Sweet Homework There is a section of reproducible forms that can be used both by parents and early childhood educators, basic teaching in American Sign Language. The book is going to be invaluable in my work as an early childhood educator but also as a parent of young children. Each chapter has fun activities to teach the kindness concept, including games like Simon Says, Friendship Fruit Soup, and The Talking Wand. Each activity is easy to implement, using items from your house, so any parent or teacher can use it easy with little prep needed. It is a fantastic resource that I know I will use for many years to come and I know that the techniques I use with my girls, will be passed on to their own children down the road. This is a great resource that should be in every early childhood education program out there and can be adapted for all sizes of programs, and cultures! I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
